The Phlebotomist is responsible for the efficient collection of blood specimens from patients for diagnostic testing. This role requires professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to perform procedures according to established protocols to ensure the safety and comfort of patients. Key Responsibilities: Blood Collection: Perform venipunctures and capillary collections from patients of all ages.Follow proper procedures for specimen collection to ensure accurate results.Ensure patient identification is correct before specimen collection.Ensure proper labeling of specimens and documentation for accurate tracking.Patient Interaction:Explain procedures to patients to ensure they are comfortable and informed.Maintain a professional, empathetic demeanor when dealing with patients, especially in high-stress situations.Address patient concerns and provide reassurance during blood collection.Assist patients with forms and other necessary documentation, if required.Specimen Handling:Properly handle and transport specimens to the laboratory in accordance with established guidelines.Ensure specimens are prepared for processing, following quality control protocols.Assist with specimen processing as needed in the lab (e.g., centrifugation, aliquoting).Safety and Sanitation:Adhere to safety protocols for handling bloodborne pathogens and other potentially hazardous materials.Ensure compliance with infection control procedures and workplace safety standards.Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including proper disposal of needles, syringes, and other biohazardous waste.Documentation and Record-Keeping:Accurately maintain patient records, specimen logs, and lab results.Update and file patient forms and reports in compliance with laboratory policies and procedures.Ensure compliance with privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA) when handling patient information.Collaboration with Lab Team:Work closely with lab technicians, supervisors, and other healthcare professionals to ensure proper specimen handling and processing.Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection and documentation.Participate in training and development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.Qualifications:Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Certification as a Phlebotomist from an accredited program preferred.Experience: Previous experience in phlebotomy or in a healthcare setting preferred.Skills & Abilities:Knowledge of blood collection techniques and lab safety protocols.Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy under pressure.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle difficult situations with professionalism.Proficiency in basic computer systems and data entry.
