Technician

A splicer, especially a fiber optic splicer, is a skilled technician responsible for joining fiber optic cables using specialized tools to ensure secure and efficient data transmission. They perform splicing, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of fiber optic networks. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Splice Fiber Optic Cables:

  • Use fusion splicers and other tools to accurately align and fuse fiber optic cables.

  • Ensure minimal signal loss during the splicing process.

  • Handle both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables.

• Testing and Troubleshooting:

  • Conduct tests to ensure the quality and integrity of spliced connections.

  • Troubleshoot network issues and identify the cause of problems.

  • Use tools like OTDRs (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers) and power meters.

• Cable Preparation and Installation:

  • Prepare fiber optic cables for splicing, including stripping and cleaving.

  • Install and maintain fiber optic cables in both indoor and outdoor environments.

• Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of splicing activities and test results.

  • Understand and interpret engineering plans and schematics.

• Other Tasks:

  • May be involved in field work, including excavation, conduit installation, and restoration of work areas.

  • Provide technical support to team members and customers.

  • Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and procedures.

• Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in using fiber optic splicing equipment and tools.

  • Knowledge of fiber optic cable types and splicing techniques.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.

  • Good communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Physical fitness and ability to work in various environments.
