Job Description:
Patient Assessment:
1. Conduct comprehensive and ongoing assessments of critically ill patients, including vital signs, neurological status, cardiac monitoring and respiratory status.
2. Evaluate patients' responses to treatment and medications.
Treatment and Interventions:
1. Administer critical medications, monitor intravenous lines and maintain life support equipment.
2. Perform invasive procedures, including intubation, mechanical ventilation and insertion of central lines.
Collaboration and Communication:
1. Collaborate closely with physicians, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement patient care plans.
2. Communicate patient progress, changes and critical events to the healthcare team.
Patient Stabilization:
1. Monitor patient condition, adjust treatment plans and stabilize critically ill patients.
2. Be prepared to respond swiftly to code situations and other life-threatening emergencies.
Family and Patient Support:
1. Provide emotional support and information to patients and their families during a time of crisis.
2. Address concerns, answer questions and keep families informed about the patient's condition.
Documentation:
1. Maintain accurate and timely patient records, including assessments, interventions and communication with the healthcare team.
2. Document all aspects of care for legal and medical purposes.
Infection Control:
1. Follow strict infection control protocols to ensure patient safety.
2. Maintain a clean and sterile environment within the ICU.
Resource Management:
1. Manage equipment, supplies and medications to ensure they are readily available for patient care.
2. Operate and troubleshoot specialized equipment in the ICU.
Discharge and Follow-Up:
1. Coordinate the patient's discharge or transfer to appropriate units or facilities.
2. Provide detailed discharge instructions and follow-up recommendations.
Required Skill Sets:
1. Proficiency in operating ICU equipment, including ventilators, cardiac monitors and intravenous pumps.
2. Strong clinical and critical thinking skills.
3. Effective communication and teamwork skills.
4. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
5. Ability to remain calm under pressure and work effectively in a high-stress environment.
