Academic Counsellor

Position Summary:
The Academic Counsellor provides guidance and support to students in academic decision-making, personal development, and overall well-being. This role involves working closely with students to help them navigate their educational path, identify academic goals, and overcome any challenges they may encounter. The Academic Counsellor collaborates with faculty, parents, and staff to ensure students achieve their fullest potential in their academic journey.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Academic Guidance:

   • Provide one-on-one academic counselling sessions to students regarding course selection, academic performance, and career aspirations.

   • Assist students in understanding academic policies, graduation requirements, and other institutional processes.

   • Develop academic plans tailored to each student's goals and aspirations, ensuring alignment with their strengths and interests.

2. Assessment and Monitoring:

   • Monitor student progress throughout the academic year, identifying at-risk students and providing proactive intervention strategies.

   • Offer advice and strategies for students facing academic challenges, including tutoring referrals, time management skills, and study techniques.

3. Career and College Planning:

   • Guide students in exploring career opportunities and educational pathways (e.g., college applications, scholarships, internships, etc.).

   • Provide support and resources for college admissions, including essay reviews, interview prep, and application processes.

4. Workshops and Group Sessions:

   • Plan and facilitate workshops on various topics such as study skills, test-taking strategies, mental health, stress management, and time management.

   • Organize group sessions that promote academic and personal growth, as well as peer interaction and support.

5. Collaboration and Coordination:

   • Collaborate with faculty members, administrators, and other support staff to ensure students receive holistic support.

   • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student meetings, progress, and academic goals.

   • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians, keeping them informed of students' academic performance and any challenges they may face.

6. Support for Special Needs Students:

   • Work with students with disabilities or learning differences to develop strategies that allow them to succeed academically.

   • Collaborate with Special Education staff to ensure students receive appropriate accommodations.

7. Crisis Intervention:

   • Provide short-term support for students experiencing personal, emotional, or academic crises.

   • Refer students to appropriate mental health professionals or other resources when necessary.

8. Student Advocacy:

   • Act as a student advocate, ensuring students have access to necessary resources and support to overcome academic challenges.

   • Ensure all students have a clear understanding of institutional policies and available support services.

Qualifications:

• Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field (Master's preferred).

• Experience:

  • Prior experience in academic counseling or student support services.

  • Experience in educational planning, college advising, or related fields is a plus.

• Skills:

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).

  • Ability to build rapport with students, parents, and staff.

  • Knowledge of academic policies, educational systems, and career development resources.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and student management software.
